What to expect during your assessment
During your first appointment, you will be asked a number of questions to help me understand your symptoms and how the problem is affecting you and your life. You will then have a physical assessment where you will be asked to perform specific movements, allowing me to assess your range of movement and strength and any discomfort it may cause. A hands-on assessment may also be necessary, to gain a better understanding of what might be causing the problem. Where possible it is helpful for the affected area to be exposed so it can be assessed fully, your dignity and privacy will be maintained at all times. However if you are not comfortable with this we can work around it.
At the end of your first appointment, I will provide you with an detailed explanation regarding the cause of your symptoms and provide you with education and advice on how to manage the condition initially. Where appropriate treatment will be provided.
Treatment, which may include:
-
mobilisation and/or manipulation of the spine and/or other joints
-
soft tissue mobilisation/massage
-
acupuncture
-
strapping or tapping; to support the joints and facilitate muscle activation
-
a specific exercise programme focusing on stretching, mobilising, strengthening and stabilising the affected area depending on what is needed. Exercise programs are also individually tailored and aim to get you back to your normal day to day activities or sports.
-
lifestyle education and advice.
-
pain management advice

Follow-up physiotherapy sessions will consist of a brief discussion regarding any changes in your symptoms, and how you have felt since the last session. Reassessment may be necessary and treatment will follow as appropriate. Throughout the whole process you will be involved in the decision making and all treatments will be fully discussed and explained to you first. Informed consent will be gained from you at each stage.
